Marking a portion of a road closed

I’m looking to mark a portion of a specific road as closed, but when I click the road it highlights the entire road. I don’t want to mark the entire road closed. How do I separate a road to mark a portion of it closed?

Hi, welcome to OSM!
Are you using the edit function on openstreetmap.org?

The usual practice is to add a node where you want to split the way and split it there, either by

  1. highlighting the node, right-click on it and choose “Split”
  2. highlighting the node and pressing X in iD (the default editor on osm.org)

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Happy mapping!

Is this a permanent or long-term closure, or a temporary closure for roadworks?

This is a permanent road closure. I apologize for the lack of detail…new to OpenStreetMap. I’ll be sure to more detailed in future edits. Thank you!

Don’t worry, we all have to start somewhere!

Once you’ve split the closed section of the highway, it might be worth using a lifecycle prefix, particularly if it still appears to be open in aerial imagery.

For example, if the road surface has been removed, you might change the highway tag to razed:highway. If everything is intact, it’s been fenced off and could (in principle) be reopened, you might use disused:highway or abandoned:highway

See Lifecycle prefix - OpenStreetMap Wiki for more information.
