My Local shop has a post office counter, it is ran by someone who also works in the shop, so I believe it is a post_office=post_partner situation however when I start to edit that, post_office:brand 's drop down suggestions don’t include Royal Mail, which means either I am the first to map one of theese in the UK, or much more likely, I am making a mistake in doing this. Does anyone have any ideas?
If it’s a full Post Office counter, then it’s not a post_office=post_partner situation. In the UK at least, I think that would only be used for things like shops that offer a DHL or Hermes drop-off / sales points.
You can either map the post office as a separate node to the shop or combine the two. The first option is probably better if the shop itself has its own separate branding, since you can then tag the relevant brands on the two objects separately.
Post Offices are managed by Post Office Ltd, which is entirely separate from Royal Mail now. (The latter was privatised by the coalition government, while the former remains in public ownership.) Individual branches are either directly run by Post Office Ltd (so-called “Crown offices”), or operated on a franchise-like basis by partner businesses (e.g. WHSmith) or individual store owners.
Is it still a seperate node when the counter is on the same bench as all their tills, and it is ran by one of the shop’s cashiers?
If there’s a (Post Office Ltd) Post Office then we would want an object with amenity=post_office somewhere. If the shop is essentially just a Post Office (perhaps with a few stationery / newsagent items available, then I’d just have a single object for both the shop and PO. But if the shop is something more (as it seems to be here), e.g. a convenience store or something like a WHSmith, I’d have separate objects for the two, as they’re more like separate entities. You might also want to add a note=* tag on the PO node, confirming that it’s inside the other shop.
it isn’t one of the smiths one’s where it is a seperate floor or booth, it is literally just a long counter that goes checkout - checkout - checkout - checkout - parcel scale where the checkouts are for the grocery store , and if you want any post office related stuff, one of the grocery store people come to the part of the counter with the scale, it is a local grocery store, doing sandchiches, drinks, frozen meals etc, with a little section of counter for post office stuff
It will still be a post office, a separate business even though they are operated by the same people.
That’s the way things work in rural areas.
We have one of those in Charlbury - it’s in the Coop. I agree it should be a separate node. It’s functionally no different from a normal Post Office and it has its own opening hours.
