I totally agree with Simon. Usually, we don’t tag just for renderers and routers, but that’s exactly what the proposed solution is doing by saying, “We have to add bicycle=yes explicitly because XYZ router needs it.”

I think we should stick to some global defaults and let routers adapt. There hasn’t been a global agreement on needing explicit tagging, so pushing it as a universal standard doesn’t seem right.

If a place like the Netherlands is doing well with explicit access tags, that’s awesome, but it shouldn’t be forced on everyone else.

This just reinforces the idea that OSM should have global defaults for routers. Instead of letting these complaints pile up in DWG mailboxes, we should use them as an opportunity. If we send them to the developers of the maps or routers with the global defaults in mind, they’re more likely to make changes.
