Trails: Use ‘Name’ and/or ‘Hiking Route?’

Someone walking their dog along a section of path that happens to be part of the Appalachian Trail won’t say “I’m just about to take Fido for a short hike on the Appalachian Trail.”

People would absolutely say this. I don’t understand this comment.
