Remove โ€Share on X.comโ€

It is also not a valid criterion for making a decision that will affect hundreds of users of this forum.

I didnโ€™t say that was the end result, I just said thatโ€™s where itโ€™s headed.

But the final decision is up to the technical team. Weโ€™re just checking if thereโ€™s agreement because without that itโ€™s impossible to even think about it.

I am somewhat put off by your attempt to essentially label calls for basic human dignity as mere โ€œpoliticsโ€. In my opinion, that is the the same mindset that will allow global warming to be called โ€œjust one of many opinionsโ€, or will see โ€œfine people on both sidesโ€ of a violent clash.

I think that OSM is very much a political endeavour.

Weโ€™ve had a similar argument years ago when the OSMF board decided on an open source policy that called for everyone in the OSMF sphere to attempt to use open source stuff where possible. There were people who disagreed then and said that weโ€™re not about open source and hence shouldnโ€™t complain when someone prefers Illustrator over Inkscape, and there were others who said that open source is very much like what we do in spirit and that needs to be recognized.

(And of course we have rules to govern our own behaviour on these forums and in the project - and if we have already agreed that we donโ€™t tolerate racist remarks inside our community, I donโ€™t see why disagreeing with a platform that does tolerate racism is suddenly out of scope and โ€œpoliticsโ€!)

But I can see that this is a wider issue that should maybe debated in a separate thread so Iโ€™ll say, in this thread, letโ€™s get rid of X because it is useless clutter.

Thanks for sharing the settings. Personally Iโ€™d disable all of them, guessing that folks here who are active on social media will know how to share the URL on their platform of choice.

I find it ironic that X gets the most prominent placement in both the Share Topic dialog box and the text selection popup, even though the OSM community has largely shifted to other platforms in recent years. If anything, there should be a button for Mastodon, acknowledging all that @amapanda_แšแš‹แšแš…แš‡แš and others have done to make OSM Town a vibrant space. That would be fair.

Even if we remove all the buttons, I donโ€™t think itโ€™ll have a noticeable impact on OSMโ€™s visibility or community health. Do yโ€™all remember back when Potlatch and iD presented you with Twitter and Facebook buttons as soon as you saved a changeset, so you could interrupt your friendsโ€™ lunch and cat photos with your changeset links? People did use the Twitter option โ€“ a whopping 37 times in English in all of 2015 โ€“ before iD replaced it with the OSM Community Index.

The OSM OWG / forum team isnโ€™t going to develop a custom Discourse feature if thatโ€™s not supported. Creating a poll for that is pointless.

I must say that it is easy to see where certain posts are going and that it is also possible to predict future comments.
I was just waiting for the mention of Mastodon to just reply:
Mastodon is not free from prejudice, extremist comments, โ€ฆ and if X (Twitter) is being criticized, what does Mastodon do differently?
The same content is found on both social networks.
A social network is criticized for certain content, and another social network with the same content is recommended.
I understand the difference between promoting and sharing certain sensitive content, and the most ridiculous thing is that an AI generates so much controversy.
In my opinion the whole matter could be summed up as:
Letโ€™s remove a certain social network from the sharing function of this forum because that social network promotes and has sensitive content and change it to sharing to another social network where it can be seen the same sensitive content, and the only difference is quite obvious.

I find the situation quite ironic.
If the objective is to avoid associating the forum with social networks that host sensitive or extremist content, the most coherent solution is to eliminate all social media sharing options, otherwise we risk falling into a double standard, criticizing a social network for something that is also found in the proposed alternative.

Yes. Our only options are editing the config. If changes are needed beyond what we can currently do with config changes, theyโ€™d need to go upstream into Discourse.

I doubt weโ€™d take a plugin to change this - plugins add maintenance load, and I wouldnโ€™t want to do that for a fairly small UI change.

Itโ€™s also an easy question to answer.

Mastodon is not a single entity, itโ€™s a federated network of servers where each server operates independently from each other and has different operating practices. Unlike on Twitter/X, there is no centrally controlled moderation that sets standards for acceptable content.
Allowing fascism being openly promoted and Nazis running free on X is a deliberate choice by the owners and is inherently connected to the whole social network.
Individual servers on Mastodon (or rather, using the same software and protocol) choosing to do the same is a property of those individual servers, not Mastodon as a whole.
Mastodon server operators can choose to federate with selected other servers, or ignore and block them. I would be surprised if many servers opt to federate with servers that promote these views. Mastodon is therefore best seen as a collection of social networks that all use the same protocol.

This criticism would be more valid if Mastodon was leaning in that direction overall, but thatโ€™s not the case. A social network being entirely free of prejudice and extremist comments was also never the point, thatโ€™s illusory. These views being actively promoted on the platform is.

To add to what @Woazboat said, I brought up Mastodon not for its purity but because the OSM community has adopted it to the extent of running an OSM-themed server and official OSMF accounts there. OSM Town/Mastodon/Fediverse users share posts from this forum on an almost daily basis. By contrast, in the past year, exactly one X user has posted a link to this forum. Instead of holding a poll, should we just ask @AE35 if they need this button?

These social media buttons are getting in the way, and even the  button gets more use. If we really think the Facebook and e-mail buttons are being used more often, then I guess we could keep those and remove X? :man_shrugging:

Exactly what I said;*

Maybe add Bluesky (bsky.app) and Instagram?

I support your idea for a compromise.

How would this be done?

As per our announcement, @forums-governance has now removed all links to social media platforms โ€“ including X โ€“ from the share menu.

great Thank you very much

Free/open software/culture/data is inherently political. But itโ€™s not about any other politics than โ€œthings should be free as in freedomโ€.
