Railway=station as an area?

I’m not against using railway=station on an area, but it doesn’t solve the need for a manually-placed label node. A station is not just an area containing railway infrastructure—it is also a linearly-referenced point feature that can be described as a milepost on a route.

These are also good points. This idea seems the best to me now:

railway=station as an area may work for the majority of small stations, but there are a lot of edge cases that would be better modeled as a separate railway=station node and landuse=railway area.

Which takes us back to @BáthoryPéter’s original suggestion:

where the station label would be rendered far away from the public areas of the station, we could go back to using a railway=station node, and map the station area with a separate landuse=railway area, which has an additional tag that could be chosen by agreement.

Should we name this additional tag perhaps railway:site=area or railway:site=perimeter?
