Before you are thinking about “going vector”, the problem is rather not the style but minutely updates for vector tiles. I think @pnorman is doing a lot of research and work into this.
Now the minutely updates at the current raster setup are not perfect as well in serving mappers feedback as a) not all edits result in a re-rendering and b) the CDN does not reflect the updated state immediately. Those two problems would probably persist if a toolchain is established for minutely updates of vector tiles but even getting there would require a lot of work.
