The situation w.r.t. sidewalks is insofar different as separately mapped sidewalks can affect the access tags of the “main street”. In particular, having sidewalk=yes allows routers to send pedestrians along it since there is a sidewalk included on which they can walk; sidewalk=separate means that no pedestrians are allowed there (because it solely maps the carriageway) and must instead use the separate sidewalk(s).
