Highway=trunk vs. noref, old_ref=N 340

Is this classification of old_ref=N 340 as trunk right?
Looks wrong to me, but I’m not familiar with spanish road classification

for example Way: 734565847 | OpenStreetMap

changed for 9 month from primary to trunk in Changeset: 154094927 | OpenStreetMap

BTW. primary_links weren’t changed to trunk_link.

Maybe the N 340 was partially replaced by A-48?
Between Chiclana and Vejer it is only important for local traffic.

All national highways (N-XXX) must be etiqueted as trunk, according to spanish community agreements. If the ref is N-340a as happens in Cocentaina Way: ‪Avinguda del País Valencià‬ (‪198324196‬) | OpenStreetMap, then should be replaced for an primary, secondary or even a tertiary

Maybe old_ref is wrong: (current foto) Mapillary
if trunk is o.k. then the primary_links must be changed to trunk_links.

Hello, the edition was made based on the sources that you can see in the changeset (Changeset: 154094927 | OpenStreetMap).

I checked streetlevel imagery and official references the best I could in that area.
It is possible that some parts have changed and everyone is free to fix it.

As Davileci said, the change from primary to trunk was made based on the spanish wiki and continuity in ways.
If there are some primary links from those ways that is a mistake and they should be fixed to trunk_link, something that I usually do

I hope we gave you a good answer and you can ask what you need.

As mentioned, Spanish labeling guidelines indicate that all roads classified as national (N-xxx) must be trunk roads. This is the case.

Perhaps one day, the Spanish community will have to open a debate about what to do in specific cases like this because it’s obvious that the traffic carried on this section is only local, and important traffic is being replaced by that on the A-48. Although the road is state-owned, I don’t think it should influence the concept of “importance”.

Indeed, the wiki for highway=trunk states:

Use highway=trunk for high-performance or high-importance roads that don't meet the requirements for motorway, but are not classified as highway=primary either [...]

I believe that the most similar to this are Spanish National Roads. These are owned by the national government (except in Navarre and the Basque Country), and (at least historically when they were set up) have national significance and carry long-distance traffic. However, as time passed, motorways and variants (city belts, new alignments…) were built, mostly paralleling the national roads. The newly built roads then often carry the long-distance traffic that was previously traversing the national roads, leaving those old national roads now carrying mainly either local or regional traffic.
I personally think that, even if they still bear the “National” classification, and are still in a lot of cases owned by the national government, they should not have the highway=trunk classification anymore. Their traffic no longer (even if it once did) justifies carrying such an important classification. I believe that we have to decide, as the Spanish community, how to tag those highways, making them also in line with international mapping practices, and with the situation on the ground.
