Extend post edit time limit to a year

What and who is affected by this issue/request?

I have two posts that I want to edit. They are a call for help and that is now outdated, so I want to update the post to make sure users know that they don’t need to apply anymore.

I was able to update the second post but not the first one.

When I look at the UI there is no way for me to find out why the Edit button is gone. I don’t use this forum a lot, so I was wondering if I just did not see it and searched around…

There is a delete-button, but that tells me that I lack permissions.

Where on the platform does it happen?

On once own posts.

How do we replicate the issue?

Post something, wait for some time…
According to Editing old reply - #3 by Map_HeRo the current time limit is 1 month.

Expected behavior (i.e. solution)

  1. Increase the edit time to about a year or two. We have great Versioning of post, so every change is transparent. I want to be able to update my post when things change, so new readers don’t have to hunt for a maybe update in the comments.
  2. Show the edit button disabled with a info tooltip just like the delete button, so users can understand what is going on.

While i understand your request, it is also possible to ā€œReport this postā€ with a custom reason and just explain - it happened to me.
I don’t think its happening that often, do you?

But your reasoning with the post-history is good in my opinion. I think it would be fine with increasing this from 1 month to 6 months.
But i also think that the ā€œreport own post with reasonā€ is valid, but its not intuitive at all.

I thought about this, but I did not know what would happen. I also don’t consider it something that I want to bother moderators with.

I don’t think this is a valid alternative to edit, because I did not understand it as such and the UI does not suggest it.

The only reasons I see why the limit is there to begin with is to prevent spam abuse of old, unused and then hacked (password leaks) accounts. So having 6-12 month of time should still allow users to work with their post but prevent this from happening.

Did we have issues with this kind of abuse in the old forum (that would not be resolved by the versioning feature we have now)?

Do you know it the UI can be configured to explain this situation better?

  1. Show the edit button disabled with a info tooltip just like the delete button, so users can understand what is going on.
