Are the borders of Kolkata changed?

While lurking around Wikimedia projects, especially Wikipedia and Commons, I have noticed that the borders of Kolkata now look distorted, similar to Google Maps. Then I opened OpenStreetMap and found that someone had changed the borders of Kolkata and made it similar to Google Maps. However, the previous borders were accurate, as they corresponded to the map of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), the civic body governing the city. I’m providing the map of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation during the 2011 Census of India: https://censusindia.gov.in/2011census/dchb/1916_PART_B_DCHB_KOLKATA.pdf. The only recent change of the borders is the annexation of Thakurpukur and Joka in 2014.

Hi,

Yes, the boundaries of every district of West Bengal were updated a couple of months ago to the ones provided by SOI for free usage through their “Onlinemaps” portal. Kolkata in itself is a district (admin_level=5). Now if the district boundary was previously from the KMC data, that would’ve certainly been incorrect, though we can add this back as a Municipal Corporation/Muncipal Boundary (admin_level=8). The boundary for KMA/Greater Kolkata could also be added separately as a boundary with admin_level=7.

Hope this helps!
